Materials Philosophy

Porcelain

Most Otts & Kulcha vessels and bowls are made from high-fire porcelain: chosen for its fine grain, durability, and the way it receives our complex patinas. Porcelain offers a luminous, almost metallic surface under certain glazes, allowing us to evoke surfaces from hammered bronze to cooling lava without compromising strength or function. Its density and smoothness make it ideal for both functional serveware and sculptural works.

Stoneware

Our Voidforms and Tobacciana pieces are built from robust stoneware bodies, valued for their earthy tactility and ability to carry more aggressive surface treatments. Stoneware’s coarser structure lends weight, presence, and a sense of unearthed history to each piece.

Patinas

Patinas like Virunga, Space Oddity, and Megaregolith are the result of processes that merge glaze chemistry with atmospheric firing, producing cratered voids, molten transitions, and painterly fields. Many are rooted in rare or limited materials, with each firing yielding variations that make every piece unique.

Function & Sculpture

Some forms are designed for daily use, others to exist as sculptural statements, and many live in between. A serveware form in Virunga might grace a dining table, while the same form in Space Oddity becomes an object for contemplation. This fluidity between function and art is central to our philosophy: a vessel’s purpose is as much about the atmosphere it holds as the contents it carries.
